Practice

I have been in practice as a specialist orthopaedic surgeon in Newcastle since 1995. Since 2001 I have consulted in private practice as a knee only consultant with the start of the "Newcastle knee clinic" at Kotara.I operate exclusively on the knee and have a proactive approach to problem management.

Surgical Intervention

Prompt pre-surgical diagnosis in the acute setting can be required and with the weekly Acute Knee Clinic, an appointment can be allocated quickly. Often in the sport injury early intervention has the best possible outcome for the patient.

Prevention of Arthritis and Joint Replacement

I specialize in noninvasive and non-surgical assessment and management of knee problems, focusing on modifiable factors which may cause or accelerate Osteoarthritis. The endpoint for people with arthritis maybe a joint replacement or a life of pain and disability if , for medical reasons they cannot have joint replacement .

If appropriate treatment is started early the risks of this may be decreased. I work closely with physiotherapists and dieticians to help ensure patients have as healthy a lifestyle as they can achieve. Many people with knee problems can avoid surgery and decrease their risk of needing surgery by obtaining an accurate early diagnosis of their condition which is obtained by performing a careful history, examination and ordering appropriate investigation. I believe in Diagnosis and evidence based management. My philosophy is holistic and proactive.

Investigations

I have no financial interest in any imaging companies and work closely with local service providers to ensue "world Class" protocols are used to optimize assessment. Examples of this has seen

  1. Adoption of additional sequences to identify ACL partial ligament injury which may be missed with conventional MRI

  2. Adoption of digitalized long leg alignment films to increase accuracy of assessment of leg shape and length.

  3. Adoption of CT protocols for investigation of patellofemoral joint instability and pain.

If people have had significant history of injury MRI is often organised and at times alignment studies are done. Some people in the community may as a result of ligament or cartilage injury, nutrition, fracture or genetics have a leg shape or length which may predispose to adverse outcome and alignment assessment may help guide their management.

Education

I have a passion for medical education and regularly lecture to local general practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and hospital staff. With other local consultant surgeons I am involved in tuition of final year Orthopaedic surgical trainees.

I travel within and outside Australia to learn improved methods of treatment. I have also visited the factories that make the orthopaedic implants in the USA , France and UK.
